SDA is excited to offer Kathak technique-based classes for youth and adults in Fall 2025 at two locations: Jersey City and Millburn. Our curriculum draws from both the Jaipur and Lucknow Gharanas, and for the 2025–2026 academic year, the program will be modeled on the Kathak Certification Course offered by Gandharva Mahavidyalaya.
These classes will focus on building a strong foundation in Kathak, refining technique, learning choreography, and gaining a deeper understanding of Kathak theory. At the Prarambhik level, students are introduced to the fundamental techniques and theoretical aspects of Kathak, including:
Basic tatkaar (footwork patterns)
Simple todas and tukras (short rhythmic compositions)
Introduction to hand gestures, postures, and facial expressions (abhinaya)
Elementary theory covering the origins of Kathak, basic musical concepts, and the importance of taal (rhythm cycles)
This level aims to develop coordination, rhythm, grace, and a foundational understanding of Kathak’s cultural and artistic significance.
