SDA is excited to launch its first-ever Kathak Certification Program in Summer 2025, offered in collaboration with Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal. This structured program is designed for both youth and adults who wish to deepen their practice and work towards formal certification in Kathak.

Semester Fees- $1275
(includes registration exam fees, one costumed presentation at SDA Spring showcase)
PLEASE NOTE: This class runs from September 2025 through May 2026 and will occur twice a week preparing students for the Level 1 examination.

  • Jersey City : Nimbus Arts Center - Wednesdays 8:00pm - 9:00pm

  • Jersey City : Boys & Girls Club - Saturdays 10:00am - 11:00am

LEVEL II

  • Jersey City : Boys & Girls Club - Mondays 7:00pm - 8:00pm

  • Jersey City : Boys & Girls Club - Saturdays 11:00am - 12:00pm

 

Kathak Certification Course – Prarambhik Level
Gandharva Mahavidyalaya

The Kathak Certification Course offered by Gandharva Mahavidyalaya is a structured program designed to provide comprehensive training in the classical Indian dance form of Kathak. The course is divided into multiple progressive levels—Prarambhik (Elementary), Praveshika (Preparatory), Madhyama (Intermediate), and Visharad (Advanced). Each level builds upon core elements of rhythm (tala), expression (bhava), and storytelling through movement (abhinaya), gradually guiding students from basic foundations to advanced performance skills.

At the Prarambhik level, students are introduced to the fundamental techniques and theoretical aspects of Kathak, including:

Basic tatkaar (footwork patterns)

Simple todas and tukras (short rhythmic compositions)

Introduction to hand gestures, postures, and facial expressions (abhinaya)

Elementary theory covering the origins of Kathak, basic musical concepts, and the importance of taal (rhythm cycles)

This level aims to develop coordination, rhythm, grace, and a foundational understanding of Kathak’s cultural and artistic significance.

Certification is awarded by the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, one of India’s most respected institutions for classical music and dance education.
