JC In- Studio Dance Classes- Winter/Spring 2024
SDA offers dance (Bollywood, Hip Hop, BollyJazz, Kathak, and Bharatanatyam) as well as Cultural Exploration lessons at our Jersey City Locations. This semester, Cultural Exploration students will be working on Bal Krishna Leela. Our term concludes with a 2- 2.5 minute costumed choreography and the opportunity to perform at the SDA Spring Showcase 2024.

Bollywood Beginners class aims to familiarize students with Freestyle Bollywood moves mainly focusing on:
Recognizing the Beat and Identifying 8-counts
Basic stance and technique
Building Hand eye coordination
Building student concentration and focus
Memorizing Choreography through word cues
Bollywood I
Ages: 4 - 5.5 years

Bollywood I covers basic freestyle Bollywood moves with emphasis on:
Basic steps, postures, and spatial positioning
Developing hand-leg coordination
Listen and respond to musical cues/beats and time their moves as per the beat
Furthering student concentration and focus
Encouraging students to work independently
Awareness of movements and transitions between moves
Bollywood II
Ages: 5.5 - 7 years

Bollywood II, with its semi-complex choreography and large group coordination, mainly aims at:
Improving posture, stance and technique
Including semi complex legwork, spatial movement and turns
Focusing on transitions of positions within the routine
Learn the importance of teamwork
Learning the emotion of the track and basics of expression
Tips and tools to perform with cues from the teacher
Bollywood III
Ages: 7+ years

Bollywood III students must have the ability to concentrate for the entire length of the class as it has advanced choreography and stylized techniques focusing on:
Complex legwork, large spatial movements and spins
Transitions and formations to elevate the routine
Coordinating with partners or teammates to excel in the routine
Emoting to the track, expressions, and focus on stage presence
Memorizing cues to perform independently
Kathak >
Ages: 6+ years

Kathak class focuses on teaching basic Kathak footwork (Teen Taal) and hand movements (Hastaks) with emphasis on:
Strengthen Kathak posture, stance and basic technique
Correct technique for chakkars (Kathak circles)
Musicality and expressions
Moving gracefully and fluidly throughout the routine
Learning and mastering hand movements and expressions
Memorize a piece of choreography and perform it without using the teacher’s cues
Bharatnatyam
Ages: 6+ years

Bharatanatyam Class covers Natya (theatrical expressions), Bharatanatyam technique, and graceful choreography with the following objectives:
Strengthening Bharatanatyam stance and posture
Studying Bharatanatyam mudras (Hastas)
Learning to express the words of the songs with body movements and facial expressions
Practicing traditional classical Bharatanatyam choreography to Carnatic music
Covering the semi-complex technique of Bharatanatyam Mudras, Adavus, and Abhinaya
Memorizing a piece of choreography and performing it without using the teacher’s cues
Hip Hop I
Ages: 7-9 years

Our Hip Hop I class aims at teaching the basics of Hip Hop and focuses on the following:
Basic Hip Hop footwork and technique
Understanding the musicality and texture of Hip Hop
Improvising the student’s body movements, rhythm, and control
Moving to the beat with stylized moves
Memorizing choreography and performing it as a group
Coordination and Teamwork
Hip Hop II
Ages: 9+ years

Our Hip Hop II class focuses on the foundations of Hip Hop, and advanced Hip Hop technique with an aim to:
Improve footwork, body control, and body movements
Understand the musicality and texture of hip-hop dance
Practice technique and learn stylized footwork for finesse
Grasp complexities of Hip Hop footwork and agility
Exposure to various hip-hop styles like locking, shuffling, and top rock dance
BollyJazz
Ages: 7+ years

The contemporary class covers the techniques of contemporary dance with emphasis on:
Foundational ballet to strengthen basic posture and grace
Strength and flexibility exercises
Floor work, contract and release, fall and recovery
Contemporary dance techniques, musicality and emoting to music
Techniques of chains, pirouette preparation, and ballet legwork.
Build a foundation of contemporary techniques
Memorize and perform a piece of choreography without the teacher’s cues
Bal Krishna Leela
Ages: 4+ years

SDA and Buzy Bugs are excited to bring ‘Bal Krishna Leela-a curated theatre presentation of the life stories of our beloved mythological character Krishna. It will be for children and by children. Students will learn about and rehearse the episodes from Krishna’s childhood replete with mischief and moral messages
Our special program will be conducted over 12 sessions culminating in an immersive experience involving performance, sets, props and costumes. Parents, friends and family will have a chance to enjoy a live showcase of the epic story of mother and child bond, friendship and fulfilling one’s destiny.
Our creatively stimulating and culturally immersive program aims to impart:
